NBA Player Jason Collins Comes Out of the Closet

Jason Collins

“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay”.

Is how Jason Collins opens up his essay written to Sports Illustrated, in their upcoming June 2013 issue about his sexual orientation.

The Washington Wizards player made a very bold move, as he is now the first active player in one of the four major American professional team sports to announce that he is gay.

Needless to say, he came out in a community where being gay is still kind of a taboo. Yikes!

Sure, times have changed…people are a lot more supportive, but for some reason in the world of sports, the image of a “Male Athlete” is pretty much solidified. Groupies, Locker Room Banter, and Raging Egos leave no room for Open Minded thinkers and social progression. I hope I’m wrong, because we’ve certainly come a long way, and shouldn’t stop now.

The letter was very moving and has pegged Collins as a social hero of our times. Although it seems like one of the most difficult decisions he’s ever had to make, im sure it’s also a load off of his shoulders. And is paving the way for other gay athletes to take a stand. It’s admirable that he took such a big risk.

I know what you’re thinking, what are his teammates going to say? His Fans? Here’s what he had to say in regards to that:

As far as the reaction of fans, I don’t mind if they heckle me. I’ve been booed before. There have been times when I’ve wanted to boo myself. But a lot of ill feelings can be cured by winning”

“I’ve been asked how other players will respond to my announcement. The simple answer is, I have no idea. I’m a pragmatist. I hope for the best, but plan for the worst.”

This will certainly raise some eyebrows and cause a stir, but I’m sure Collins is ready for the controversy “Next season a few more eyeballs are likely to be on me. That only motivates me to work harder”.

Wishing Jason Collins the best of luck in this upcoming season and all of his future endeavors!
